About this guide

Welcome to the Pay Equity & Salary Negotiation Resource Guide

Fair pay is an essential part of building a thriving, equitable library workforce. This guide brings together tools, articles, and best practices to help library workers and hiring managers understand the importance of pay equity—and take steps to achieve it.

Tips

Three Numbers to Know Before Negotiating Salary

  1. Market Rates for Similar Roles: What are others in your field getting paid? Research online to find the pay for roles that match your title, responsibilities, location, and experience.
  2. The Company’s Pay Range: If the range is not posted in the job ad, try asking the recruiter or researching on sites like Glassdoor. Knowing their range will give you an understanding of how much room there may be to negotiate.
  3. Your Ideal Range: Know in your mind what your target salary is and the minimum you’ll accept. Avoid disclosing your range too early in the process. To maintain leverage, let the employer reveal their range first.

Having an understanding of these three numbers can help you know what’s fair, what’s possible, and what feels right for you!
