While “collection development” is the term most likely used in your library, the actual maintenance of a collection goes through several phases. From acquisitions through weeding, it creates a holistic cycle that depends on all of its parts. It can work like a well-oiled machine, or break due to neglecting any piece. To fully understand and be in tune with your library collections, recognizing the life cycle of the collection is critical.
At the end of this class, attendees will be able to:
- Name the eight components of the collection life cycle
- Outline the standard elements of a collection policy
- Develop strategies to create a holistic collection management process
