Wayfinding & Signage: Wayfinding

A companion guide to the Spring 2024 workshop: Wayfinding & Signage: principles and planning

Three Levels of Wayfinding

1. Orientation - provides information about where the patron is in relation to the larger space, in order to decide which direction they must go in to reach their destination.

2. Route Decision - guides patrons' path to their destination, providing clarity at "decision points" such as intersections, stairs, and elevators.

3. Destination - reassures patrons as they approach their final destination, letting the patron know they're on the right path and almost there!

This is a very simple and flexible framework for wayfinding design. Each of these three levels must be considered for a through wayfinding plan. The tools employed at each level (e.g. signs, arrows, maps) should follow the same design standards in use of colors, fonts, and other branding requirements.
