The Massachusetts Library System (MLS) is developing structured learning pathways to support library staff at different stages of their careers. These pathways are designed to build competencies in areas such as youth services, management, and core library skills. This initiative responds to the FY24 training needs assessment, which highlighted member interest in flexible, career-aligned training options.
The first pathway in development focuses on youth services. It is shaped by input from over 130 youth services staff and hiring managers and emphasizes flexibility, inclusivity, and community engagement. Course development for the Youth Services Learning Pathway is currently underway.
Work is now underway on pathways for library managers and supervisors, with tracks for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. MLS is currently accepting survey responses through May 21, 2025, to directly inform the courses, competencies, and learning outcomes of the Library Manager and Supervisor Learning Pathways.
Additional pathways will follow, continuing the MLS commitment to providing targeted, high-impact learning opportunities. This initiative aligns with the MLS FY25 Action Plan (Strategic Initiative 1, Goal 3) to strengthen workforce skills and support the professional growth of member library staff.
