The Massachusetts Library System (MLS) is developing Library Manager and Supervisor Learning Pathways to support staff in building practical, performance-based skills for supervision, operations management, and daily decision-making. These pathways emphasize core competencies such as communication, workflow oversight, coaching, and ethical accountability—skills that directly affect service quality and workplace climate. While not strictly sequential, each course level builds depth in key areas to support managers and supervisors at different stages of responsibility. The pathways include both core and elective courses: core courses focus on essential competencies, while electives offer flexibility and allow learners to explore topics relevant to their specific roles or interests.
Member feedback is currently being gathered to refine the draft courses, competencies, and learning outcomes. You can explore a draft preview of the Library Manger and Supervisor Learning Pathways and provide feedback below.
